Alternative Treatments for Diabetes

While common enough that we may take its seriousness for granted from time to time, every diabetic knows just how difficult – and potentially deadly – that disease can be for those who suffer from it. Thankfully, science is revealing many options for the treatment of diabetes and, thankfully, there are even more options available than you likely know!

While you certainly shouldn’t turn your back on modern medicine, there are many natural treatments out there that promise to help you to rein in and manage your diabetes, each one of them worth a long look if you’re serious about taking control of your life and putting your disease on the backburner.

Here are the goods on three of the best types of alternative treatments for diabetes:

1. Plant Products

Because most plant products are high in fiber, there are immediate benefits to consuming a diet rich in plant-based foods, especially when diabetes has a role to play. Increased levels of fiber have been shown to aid in controlling blood sugar levels, with many vegetables offering a particular benefit. These include:

  • Buckwheat
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Okra
  • Peas
  • Sage
  • Spinach

2. Supplements

While the research necessary to give them a strong scientific backing is still in the works, there are several supplemental compounds that are thought to aid in diabetes control through better maintenance of glucose production, and apparent aid in susceptibility to insulin.

One such supplement, chromium, is currently catching on as an alternative treatment for diabetes, though medical professionals are still some time away from officially recommending it. Another, called vanadium, has been shown to increase sensitivity to insulin, thus limiting the need for artificial injections.

Finally, simple magnesium is thought to play a role in blood sugar control, with many type 2 diabetics testing positive for a deficiency in the mineral. While currently unproven, magnesium supplements may help to correct that deficiency over the long term, improving the symptoms of type 2 diabetes in the process.

3. Weight Loss Aids

A big focus of the initial treatment of type 2 diabetes is losing weight, allowing your body to more easily regulate itself and its chemical composition. Obviously, this can present quite a difficulty for many people, making the use of agents that promise to help in the endeavor worth considering.

There are many natural compounds that are thought to aid in rapid, healthy weight loss. They include:

  • Aristolochic acid
  • Camsogia garcinia
  • Chitosan
  • Germander
  • Momordica charanta
  • Sauropus androgynus
