Juggling diabetes with any activity can be difficult, but the high energy levels required for bodybuilding make working out one of the toughest. Between watching your glucose levels and protein sources, concentrating on getting ripped while trying to simultaneously focus on being the healthiest possible diabetic you can be can feel like a full-time job.

It does require a bit of extra work, but being diabetic doesn’t mean that you can’t be as buff as the next guy – you’ll just need to be sure that you follow a few healthy tips:

1. Test Your Blood Sugar Before Working Out

The last thing you need with 200 pounds of weight held over your head is to succumb to the sudden effects of low blood sugar levels, and this means testing your levels right before you get started – each and every time you hit the gym.

Big risks aside, there are other good reasons for being sure that your blood sugar level is normal before pumping iron. First, if your blood sugar is low, your energy levels will match, leaving you without the gas needed to complete a serious session. Second, if your blood sugar is too high, your body will quickly turn to burning muscle tissue for fuel; fat may be a preferred source for a hungry body, but the amino acids found in muscle tissues will also be in its sights!

2. Eat Well for Best Results

In order to increase your body’s insulin sensitivity, allowing you to fight off the ill effects of diabetes, try to eat a diet that is low in carbohydrates, giving your body the ability to enjoy the anti-inflammatory benefits of partaking of a diet that doesn’t include foods readily converted to sugars.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this means cutting back on breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, baked goods, crackers, fatty meats, and even some fruit. That may sound unappealing, but the trade-off in lean meats, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy foods is more delicious than you may think!

3. Consider Using Non-Stimulant Supplements

Non-stimulant supplements have the ability, in some cases, to help your body to become more sensitive to insulin, resulting in more fulfilling workout sessions, with the positive results spilling over into your everyday life, as well. 4. Know Your Body

At the end of the day, no one knows your body like you, and this gives you the ability to keep your inner eye on yourself throughout every bodybuilding session, ensuring that you’re not going further than is comfortable for you, especially given the fact that the many variables of diabetes have to be considered.

By following these simple tips, you’ll find that diabetes has no ability to hold you back from being as buff as you want to be!
