Gestational Diabetes Frightening Statistics
Gestational diabetes – the type of diabetes a woman develops during pregnancy “that can be treated with [diabetic] diet and/or insulin. If the glucose intolerance is not well controlled, however, the fetus can develop macrosomia (large size) that affects both the health of the baby and the birth. (source)
A wealth of terrifying statistics related to gestational diabetes have been released recently:
- The Canadian Press: “more than 21,000 Ontario women diagnosed with pregnancy-related diabetes, researchers found that almost 20 per cent had gone on to develop Type 2 diabetes within nine years of giving birth.” – that makes 1 in 5 women.
- Fox Business: risk factors of developing Type 2 diabetes include gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than nine pounds

New scientific research points to a link between smoking (nicotine) and increased blood sugar levels. The research suggests gestational diabetes women should stop smoking, stop taking nicotine substitution products and avoid second-hand smoke, as the nicotine raises blood sugar levels directly. See my blog http://www.pregnancydiabetesinto.com for more info on this new scientific study and the dangers for gestational diabetes moms.
