Tips for Preventing Diabetes
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, where the person has high levels of sugar in the blood. This disease is a lifelong disease that needs to be treated carefully. Diagnosing diabetes early on will make it very easy when it comes to treating it. There are three types of diabetes:
1. The first type is when the body does not produce insulin. What happens here is the immune system of the body attacks the insulin producing agents in the body, and insulin needs to be injected into the body. The pancreas help to adjust the level of insulin produced by the body, but when such a situation is created the process is no longer correct.
2. In the second type while the body does produce enough insulin, for some unknown reason it is not used up by the cells, as the cells become resistant. This is one of the most common type of diabetes where the individuals are either old, obese, have not had adequate physical exercise, or have others in the family who have this condition.
3. The third type is called gestational diabetes; it develops in women at the time of pregnancy. It usually disappears after the baby is born. It is important to control diabetes at this time, as it may adversely affect the mother and child.
While understanding the causes, signs, symptoms as well as treating and diagnosing diabetes is essential, it is best to prevent this condition rather than undergo treatments and take medications for the rest of your life. Here are some helpful tips you can follow –
1.Physical exercise-
This is a must, not just to prevent diabetes but also to prevent other chronic diseases such as heart conditions. Exercise also helps to build up the immune system. It is important to stay active and at the same time make the exercise a daily activity. Jogging, cycling, walking, swimming, hiking are all some of the activities you can do. As long as you exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week you can reduce the risk of diabetes.
2.Watching your weight-
Almost all diabetic patients are overweight; indirectly this seems to contribute to their diabetic problems. Losing weight will definitely reduce your chances of getting this disease. Even a relatively small, but permanent decrease in your weight can delay the chances of getting this disease.
3.Change in diet-
Of course food high in sugar, white flour or oil should be reduced. Complete restriction is not necessary, but it is important to reduce the quantity of consumption. Trans fat should also be reduced to a great extent, as it contributes to a lot of other chronic conditions as well. Consuming lots of fiber also will help to keep the blood sugar levels normal. Including fiber rich food such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains in you diet is beneficial for many reasons.
4. Smoking and Drinking-
If you needed another reason to stop smoking and drinking, then you should know that it leads to diabetes. Both these can increase the blood sugar in the body, and be the direct consequence of the second type of diabetes. It increases the level and makes it difficult for the body to absorb insulin.
